Vivid Sydney is an 18-day festival of light, music and ideas.

Vivid Light transforms Sydney into a wonderland of 'light art' sculptures, innovative light installations and grand-scale projections for all to enjoy - for free. It is a magical celebration of light-design excellence and the world's largest outdoor 'art-gallery': a unique Vivid Sydney experience.

Vivid Light engages lighting artists, designers and manufacturers from around Australia and the world to illuminate, interpret and transform Sydney’s urban spaces for 18 nights through their creative vision.

Vivid Music presents a cutting-edge contemporary music program.

From local and international acts performing at the iconic Sydney Opera House, to other large venues and small bars, Vivid Sydney 2015 will host a lively and eclectic range of live performances and ground-breaking musical collaborations.

At the heart of Vivid Music is Vivid LIVE, a program of cutting-edge music which takes place at the Sydney Opera House, Australia’s most famous building.

Vivid Ideas is the Asia Pacific's annual celebration of innovation, creativity and community, building audiences and markets for the creative industries, and offering professional development opportunities across the sector. The program truly spans the innovation and imagination sector: from technology and start-up culture to design and architecture, film and screen content to visual arts and performance, advertising and marketing to animation, VFX, lighting and events.

Over the Festival’s 18 days, Vivid Ideas brings together business and creative leaders for professional development, information updates on their industries, market opportunities and innovation: gathering all the conversations, conventions and big announcements in Sydney.

Review Vivid Sydney 2015

Accommodation Breakfree onGeorge

We booked this so we could head off for a night at Vivid. We arrived early evening to a busy checkout counter on the lower ground floor near a Chinese restaurant on the upper level. This location is right near Chinatown, in fact there is another entrance to Sussex street. It's a block away from World Square and approximately 2 from Town Hall Station.

We were given an upgrade to a 1 bedroom apartment which was a quite roomy. 2 bathrooms, Queen size bed, 2 separate single beds, self catering kitchenette, balcony and a complimentary bottle of red wine. Great start to the night. The beds were comfy and a very suitable space for a family short stay. The apartment on the first floor was was looking a bit tired and could do with a bit of a freshen up but was clean & tidy. Given it was booked out with a number of major events on the same weekend, I am sure keeping up with maintenance is difficult. It was a value for money stay that was booked on line via booking.com. Our only disturbance was the drunken Irish singer around 2 pm that sang at the top of his voice for about 30 minutes.

Lights, Camera, Action: Sydney!

On a very balmy Friday night we had the sheer joy of seeing Sydney Harbour at its absolute best - Lights! Being DSLR enthusiasts we took up a Canon email opportunity and booked ourselves in for a walking tour for Vivid. Cost was $40 each. We headed to the very busy Canon HQ in the Foundation Hall of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA). The 1 hour tour was run by two of the Canon team, we could elect to use their gear - I took the opportunity and strapped on a snappy 70D with EF-S 18-135mm lens (@$1500 value).

Camera! OMG this was an absolute treat. We were taken to some special secret and yes public vantage points to capture some great shots. Emma our trusty guide gave us tips to freeze movement to capture those stunning designs that appear on the Opera House. She was working under the watchful eye of Dave (major Canon Pro photographer from Brisbane). We moved into some new settings to get some long exposures with some silky smooth water and ghostly images and use the tripods (brought these along with us).

We headed to a new location to take some perspective shots and as if on cue the Vivid boat cruised by. I scurried to the best vantage point to line up the Opera House before the boat floated into shot -Action Sydney! Mild panic as I had to take the 2 second delay setting off in a hurry - Emma to the rescue she had it sorted in a snap!!

Almost out of time we took some final shots of the MCA in all its colourful glory. The grassed area out the front was jam packed, Sydney was such a joy to be in with so many people out & about in such a relaxed and vibrant atmosphere. The many food stalls in the Rocks left plenty of food options for the masses. The MCA GRAZE pop up bar & bistro satiated our thirst, we had left our daughters there who sat, ate, caught up and enjoyed the light show while we took the tour.

Back at Canon HQ sadly returning the 70D, we were able to chose & print an A3 of our favourite shot. Canon HQ was packed with so many products available to handle. Even their big sports lenses. Thank you Canon, thank you Sydney, you have delivered! This event is a 5 star activity for photography enthusiasts. There are many other locations other than Circular Quay, Opera House, Martin Place & foreshore including Sydney Uni & Chatswood with music including grace Jones, Morrissey, Surfjan Stevens, Daniel Johns and many Vivid theatre & ideas events incorporated. Perhaps consider the Opera House Vivid Tour for a new perspective particularly if you have been to this event before to get some behind the scenes knowledge.

This 18 day event under guidance of Creative Director Ignatius Jones brings significant $ into Sydney (particularly from international tourists) and is promoted by Destination NSW; it is a major player in the NSW Tourism Event Calendar. Billed by Medianet as "The largest light, music and ideas event in the Southern Hemisphere,Vivid Sydney is a major celebration of the creative industries. Vivid Light: Free, outdoors and amazing art installations transform Sydney's architecture and open spaces Vivid Music: Music collaborations and performances to entertain" certainly delivers. Don't miss next year this is a must any photography enthusiast.
