BYRON BAY WRITERS FESTIVAL 2015
7-9th August 2015
In early August, more than 140 influential writers and thinkers will converge on Byron Bay for Australia’s largest regional literary event; an ocean of minds unfolding stories against a backdrop of migrating whales. Don’t miss: Julia Gillard in conversation with Clare Wright, Tariq Ali with Kerry O’Brien, Helen Garner with Caroline Baum, Kate Grenville with Rosemarie Milsom, and Joanna Rakoff, author of My Salinger Year.
Karen Hitchcock
Be moved by Karen Hitchcock whose controversial Quarterly Essay Dear Life, examines our capacity to care for the elderly, and delve into country with Don Watson whose latest book The Bush is a multiple prize-winner.
Jennifer Byrne
In an Australian exclusive, BBWF is proud to present Nigerian writer Chigozie Obioma whose startling debut novel The Fishermen has received plaudits from across the literary world. Mexican-based Jennifer Clement whose compelling novel Prayers for the Stolen was shortlisted for this year’s PEN Faulkner Award for Fiction will also debut.
Jennifer Byrne from ABC TV The Book Club will join us to interview both of these international writers. We also offer you a chance to catch up with some of your favourite writers and discover new voices in our new one-on-one sessions ‘30 Minutes with...’ including Stella Prize winner Emily Bitto, Man Asian Literary Prize winner Miguel Syjuco, New York Times bestseller Liane Moriarty, artist Joshua Yeldham, master of psychological thrillers, Michael Robotham and Noah Rosenberg of Narratively, a platform for untold stories.
And then the spotlight turns to politics. Who better to examine the challenges and issues that most concern all Australians than one former Prime Minister, her Treasurer, two former state Premiers and the journalist who unseated a Prime Minister? Yes, Julia Gillard, Wayne Swan, Anna Bligh, Carmen Lawrence and Maxine McKew will all be appearing in Byron Bay.
Andy Griffiths
Kids Big Day Out returns in 2015 where kids can meet their literary heroes. Including one of Australia’s best-loved children’s authors, Jackie French, ever-popular illustrator Terry Denton and Australian superstar author Andy Griffiths

Among the guests in this year’s line-up are global heavyweight Tariq Ali and best-seller David Vann who will be matched by a chorus of strong, female Australian voices including Helen Garner, Joan London, Kate Grenville and former Prime Minister, Julia Gillard.
Byron Bay Writers Festival Director, Edwina Johnson seeks to build on the success of the 2014 Festival and amplify its reach within the region.
“More and more there is a need to cultivate and conjure community conversations about the issues that matter, and to explore the creative process. What drives it, sustains it, and affects it in our harried lives. I invite you to join us to examine the world as it is and imagine how it might be.
David Vann
“Throughout the Festival our guest poets, novelists, historians, journalists, biographers, memoirists, comedians and songwriters will challenge, entertain and share their inspirations and insights,” says Ms Johnson.
“The 2015 all-star cast marks this Festival as a must-go destination event and continues to build on our international reputation. Where else can you walk along pristine ocean beaches inspired by the writings of some of the world’s most famous authors?” asks Festival Founder and Chairman, Chris Hanley.
The 2015 Byron Bay Writers Festival will unfold from 7-9 August at the newly named Elements of Byron. It will be preceded by a series of hands-on skills development workshops commencing on 3 August at the Northern Rivers Writers Centre, and associated schools programs.
